Places of Pilgrimage

Aubert, Bishop of Avranches dreamed that Saint Michael had commanded him to build a sanctuary to Saint Michael on Mont Tombe. In 708 he had a replica of the sanctuary of Monte Gargano built there. Soon afterwards the sanctuary on Mont Tombe became a place of pilgrimage, and religious hermits settled on the Mont, and Pilgrims came to seek a state of Grace.
In the Middle Ages the routes which converged on the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel became known as the "Ways to Paradise" and "Way Montois", and the pilgrims became known as "Miquelots". Little by little tha Mont became known as "Mont Saint-Michel".
The access to the Mont, by crossing the vast expanse of sands at low tide, was very difficult and people said "If you are going to the Mont, make your will!".
In imitation of the pilgrims to Monte Gargano, the first pilgrims brought back stone, taken from the rock of the Mont. After this practice was forbidden, the shell collected from the bay became the emblem of their visit to the Mont. Since the twelvth century the shell has been superceded by the metal badge, made in the village.
